Part 142: Episode 5, Day 3, Trial Latter: Fingerprint Lock

Looks like everyone spotted this one. Now, what could possibly be in that last video segment, after panning away from an unconscious Meekins?

Music: The Blue Badger ~ I Want to Protect You

Let's go back to the start of the video. We can see Marshall's locker here. Unlit, unblemished. In fact, you can see Marshall's locker five separate times in this video, and the first four of those all look the same.

That fifth time, however... Why, where did that cloth come from!?

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Bringing our attention back to the security camera...

Sound: Realization

...

The days are short in Texas... and so are our tempers.

Very well.

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

The logic here is straightforward - the locker was not open and the cloth was not present at the start of the video. So the only way the cloth could be sticking out at the end of the video, is if Marshall at some point opened the locker during the video, while the camera was pointing away from it!

quote:

Nothing else in the video works here:

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

There! How's that for evidence!?

...

...

Please allow me to apologize for my colleague, Your Honor.
Sound: Realization

He gets carried away sometimes.

Yes, well, this certainly isn't a first.

Will you forgive him too, Officer Marshall?
Sound: Realization

He's not a bad man, just a bit... disillusioned.

Of course. I'm not one to gun down unarmed boys.

(Oh great, now Edgeworth is defending me. Guess that means I missed the mark.)
Sound: Damage 2

That sound is Phoenix giving himself the penalty, I guess?

Sound: Gavel

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Very well, let's get back to the cross-examination.

Just like that, we're brought back to the start of the cross. We have to present on that last line again to get back to where we were.

quote:

Now, there were two other times a couple updates ago where we were presenting within the video, and could have pointed out the cloth sticking out of Marshall's locker at either of those points. The first time nothing special happens; we just get a generic failure. But the second time, we get a similar scene about needing to find the relevant interesting point in the video.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

The thing that's strange about this video...

has got to be this!
Sound: Objection

Oh yes, that! I found that quite disturbing myself!
Sound: Light Bulb

Such sloppiness should not be accepted in any law enforcement agency!

Uh, no Your Honor. That's not exactly what I meant...
Sound: Stab

It seems yet again you've lost sight of the problem at hand.

What?

The reason the locker was not locked.

That is the one and only thing you must point out here, Mr. Wright.

Whew... It seems I almost walked right into the defense's trap again!

Sound: Gavel

Now I'll REALLY place him under arrest, sir!

(I've got to stay focused on that locking mechanism.)

Sound: Gavel

Very well. Let's inspect the video once more.

The rest of the scene is the same as what we saw going into examining the video for the second time, again without giving us any options on going back to the cross. I do like how this scene seems to assume that the player also presented the glove at the wrong time earlier.

Music: Objection!

The key...

lies in a certain locker shown in the video.

Sound: Realization

quote:

Original line: "See this locker that has a white cloth sticking out? This is the witness's locker." Doesn't make any sense for the judge to be saying it like that. Maybe the translators originally thought it was Phoenix's line?

Now then, let's rewind the video a bit.

The video rewinds a full panning sequence that I will forego showing you directly...

Sound: Light Bulb

What's the meaning of this, Officer Marshall!?
Sound: Whack

When the crime took place... The white cloth wasn't there.

Then... it suddenly appeared! There's only one explanation:

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Gallery

We've got the crowd buzzing again...

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

It would seem that's the only-

Sound: Objection

...

So what if my locker was opened?

Sound: Gunshot 4

...This poor fool really doesn't understand what the fingerprint sensors mean, does he?

...

It's not my fault he happened to choose mine!

...

...

Music: Silence

I love that absolutely everyone in the room understands what's going on here except him.

(He really doesn't know!)

Sound: Wipe

Music: Objection!

Uh, I hate to rain on your parade,

Sound: Realization

Oh yeah? I call your bluff.
Sound: Whack

You say I opened that locker...

Now prove it!
Sound: Gunshot 4

Another freebie as far as I'm concerned.

Sound: Realization

Marshall wasn't paying any attention when this topic was discussed twice while he was on the stand already, I guess?

We talked about this earlier today.

W-what kinda crazy talk is this!?
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Whack

(Well, Detective Gumshoe did mention something about this...)

There are even some people on the force that don't know about the fingerprint locks!

Sound: Wipe

We already referenced that comment from Gumshoe earlier, too. I wonder if the writers of this scene didn't realize that?

Sound: Desk Slam

So, Sheriff!

Sound: Objection

quote:

I truly pity you if you got this one wrong. But let's say we present our badge instead...

...

You can talk the talk alright, but you got a long ways to go before you can walk the walk!

Mr. Wright... I think even I could prove this one.
Sound: Whack
Sound: Damage 2

We deserve multiple penalties for that one, but the game is kind and only gives us one.

S-sorry, Your Honor...

(If that's Officer Marshall's locker...)

(Then only he can open it. I should know this!)

Come on, pardner.

A revolver only holds five bullets. The question is, how many you got left?

An interesting reference to us getting a guilty verdict after five penalties? Most revolvers hold six bullets (thus why they were called six-shooters), though it seems some models did hold five.

You say I opened that locker...

Now prove it!
Sound: Gunshot 4

All right, enough fooling around, let's get this one right and move on.

Music: Silence

Looks like Marshall is about to snap...

I only got one word for you, pardner.
Sound: Realization

Sound: Guilty

Well that meltdown was easier to get than I thought it would be.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel x 3

Order! Order! Order!

Witness! Explain yourself!

I assure you this is no joke, Officer Marshall.

Sound: Objection

I didn't need to show that whole animation again, but I really enjoy it. I was starting to like Marshall yesterday, but it's really satisfying taking him down.

Olé! Please answer the question!

(What is he now, a bullfighter?)

That's alright, Officer Marshall.

Sound: Realization

We can?
Sound: Light Bulb

Have a look at these floor plans.

Music: Logic and Trick

I suppose we have to formally declare that Marshall was the mystery man in the video. What's the alternative - that he watched the confrontation between Meekins and the mystery man on the monitor in the guard station, then quietly snuck in to stuff a cloth in his locker? Wait, that doesn't work either; there wasn't another entry on the ID card record.

Meekins is still the "K"iller in this drawing I suppose.

If that's so, then...

where was the witness?

(That's right. The only possible conclusion!)

Sound: Gavel

Well then? Let's hear it.

Another penalty here. Not a difficult question, though.

If Meekins is the "K", and he would have seen anyone else in the room, than Marshall must have been here. Disguised as Detective Goodman.

Sound: Desk Slam

Music: Silence

Officer Marshall was standing right here!
Sound: Objection

There? But that's...

Sound: Objection

Correct... unless the man wasn't Detective Goodman.

Sound: Desk Slam

I believe the "victim" in the video is... Officer Marshall!

Sound: Drama Pound

quote:

No interesting answers anywhere else in the floor plan, they all get the same generic failure:

Sound: Desk Slam

Music: Silence

Officer Marshall was standing right here!
Sound: Objection

Hmm...

So Officer Meekins didn't notice him standing there...

That's almost as credible as Meekins's warp theory.
Sound: Realization

Now I wonder what I missed in Meekins's testimony that involved warp theory.

Your chamber's empty, pardner. Better reload.
Sound: Damage 2

There's that penalty...

(Now they're ganging up on me!)

Perhaps...

you should think a little more about where Officer Marshall was.

Music: Logic and Trick

(Officer Meekins should have seen him in the evidence room.)

(That means the only place he could have been would be...)

Sound: Gavel

Well then? Let's hear it.

Where was Officer Marshall at the time of the crime?

We're brought back to the floor plan to try again. I suppose I could see someone getting stuck here if they are overthinking the problem instead of making the connection; hopefully that last hint from Phoenix helps them in that case.

Music: Telling the Truth

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Whack

Oh, please. Meekins already said he didn't know Goodman and he never saw the mystery man's face. And then Meekins got knifed before he could check the man's ID.

Once he saw the man's face, he'd know for sure!

He also testified about the man's reaction when confronted.

Sound: Wipe

He suddenly pulled a knife on me!
Sound: Ween

Dammit, one last ear-blowing screech for the road I guess.

Something about the officer's story puzzled me.

If the man had had his ID card, why didn't he just show it?

The answer is simple.

He couldn't show it.
Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Oh, I get it.

If he showed that, his cover would have been blown!

Sound: Realization

Do you have anything to say to this, Officer Marshall?
Sound: Objection

You've got quite an imagination, pardner.

While interesting... does anything about this event actually have anything to do with the murder of Detective Goodman?

Circumstantial evidence...? (He's still denying it!)
Sound: Realization

You're gonna have to do better than that to break a detective.

Hmm...

I can't say I particularly care for your uncooperative disposition...

Ha, second time for that comeback.

Well, Mr. Wright? Do you have any evidence proving beyond a shadow of a doubt
Sound: Whack

Uh, no? I kind of thought what we had was proof enough, really.

Well...

(Who am I kidding? I don't have anything like that...)

I can see the fear in your eyes, pardner.

Ack! (This can't be happening!)

(It's so obvious he's the one! What can I do...?)

...

I guess Edgeworth is going to cover this one.

!
Sound: Light Bulb

I'll pass onto you what someone told me when I was just starting out.

The basics...

Points for using a flashback in the proper context without any mysticism.

Sound: Wipe

Music: Suspense

Despite the dramatic music, I still have no idea what Phoenix is talking about here.

I assume he was dumping off Goodman's coat so no one asked him why he was wandering around dressed like a dead detective. But that's not exactly proof of anything.

What do you mean?

There's no reason for Officer Marshall to open his locker at the time of the crime.

Maybe the evidence room should log locker openings instead of room openings.

(Which means he didn't originally plan to open his locker...!)
Sound: Realization

Based on what? How would events have unfolded differently if he had planned to open his locker?

According to the defense's argument,

Sound: Wipe

Then, after the crime was "committed,"

Sound: Wipe

he opened it in order to put the cloth inside.

So...

just what exactly is this piece of cloth?

Perhaps...

At first I thought the cloth was just a rag he used to wipe off the bloody handprint, after he stumbled into his locker or something. But now it seems more likely that it was the coat he was wearing.

The video, again?

Fair enough.

...

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

Very well.

Let's take yet another look at the security tape.

Please show us why the witness had to open his locker!

Another penalty attached to this decision.

Music: The Blue Badger ~ I Want to Protect You

Let's keep a close eye on Marshall through this video, and on the jacket he's wearing in particular.

Nothing so far...

Still looks ordinary...

Aha! Meekins's blood is all over the shoulder of that jacket. Marshall could probably explain away wearing a decidedly non-western outfit, if anyone even noticed he was the one wearing it. But walking around with that much blood on him would be a lot harder to get away with in a crowded police station.

Could Marshall have knocked out Meekins, snuck past the camera, removed the jacket, and stuffed it into his locker in the 15 seconds it took the camera to point back at the locker? Kind of a stretch, but I'll say it's at least plausible. We never see a bloody handprint on Marshall's locker, either, so he apparently wiped it down at the same time? For that matter, we never see a bloody handprint on Gumshoe's locker, but I think the dancing Blue Badger is blocking our view of it the whole time. (And neither Meekins nor Marshall noticed it was there? Or did it get put there later?) Anyway, let's go present the bloodstain on the jacket shoulder from the prior image.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

For some reason, you disguised yourself as Detective Goodman,

"Yet"?

However, something unexpected happened.

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Realization

When asked to show your ID card, you pulled a knife on him.

However!

Sound: Light Bulb

A bloody white coat...
Sound: Realization

You couldn't just walk out like that,

...

Sound: Realization

quote:

No interesting wrong answers here:

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Well, what do you have to say to that!?

Alright, pardner.

You really want to know the reason I had to open my locker?
Sound: Realization

Why?
Sound: Light Bulb

So I could stuff you in there!
Sound: Gunshot 4

Huh!?

I'm sure the world would be a better place with you sent off to the boneyard.

Unfortunately unsolved cases can't be stored in the evidence room.

(Now I'm an "unsolved case"?)
Sound: Damage 2

I guess Phoenix gives himself the penalty on that one.

Music: The Blue Badger ~ I Want to Protect You

(Something went wrong in that evidence room...)

(That's why Marshall had to open his locker.)

(The unexpected event itself is the reason!)

(I'd better have another crack at this...)

According to the defense's argument,

From here we get the same lines from everyone as before, leading back into the video.

Sound: Gallery

Now then, Officer Marshall.

Are you ready to tell us the truth?

Looks like I underestimated y'all.

Sound: Drama Pound

...

Two years ago...

we all wouldn't have to be here now, now would we?

Sound: Desk Slam

Officer Marshall!

Tell the court what you did... All of it.

Alright.

Next time: Marshall's confession.
